Answer first: a clearance is expensive and slow to produce, so employers pay for people who already hold one. Your clearance generally stays active for a window after you separate, and it can be reactivated when a company sponsors you into a cleared role before your investigation goes stale. Does my clearance stay active after I separate?
Access ends when you leave the billet, but eligibility usually persists for a window if a sponsor picks you up before your investigation goes stale. Confirm your own status with a security officer; do not assume.
Can a company transfer my clearance?
A new employer sponsors a crossover under reciprocity when it hires you into a cleared role. Timing depends on your last investigation and the agency involved.
What is TS/SCI?
Top Secret eligibility with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information, granted after a background investigation and a formal read-in. It signals a high level of trust.
Do I need a polygraph?
Some agencies and roles require a counterintelligence or full-scope polygraph on top of TS/SCI. The job posting generally states what is needed.
How should I handle classified work on my resume?
Describe your skills and scope without revealing classified details. List the clearance level and dates, not the specifics of the mission.
Are these the only cleared employers?
No. ManTech and many smaller integrators also hire cleared veterans. This is a sample of larger employers, not a complete list.
