Ten programs, several run by the government, that prepare service members and spouses for the jump to civilian careers.
The short version
Leaving the service is a mission, so plan it like one. The government runs several transition programs, and nonprofits and employers add training, coaching, and fellowships on top. This list covers ten. Start early, because the best programs reward the members who begin a year or more out.

How to use this list
These are vetted, not ranked, and being listed here is not an endorsement. Eligibility, timing, and availability change, so confirm current details on each official site. Line these up with the money side: read the terminal leave and starting a civilian job guide, sharpen your LinkedIn profile, and see how SkillBridge can bridge you into a job.
Start with the required, then add the extras
The Transition Assistance Program is required and government-run, so it is your baseline. The programs below build on it: a SkillBridge fellowship for hands-on experience, certification training, and mentorship. Stack the ones that fit your goal.

Frequently asked questions
Is TAP required?
Yes. The Transition Assistance Program is required for most separating members, generally starting about a year out. Treat it as the floor, not the ceiling.
When should I start planning my transition?
As early as your service allows, often 12 to 24 months before separation. Earlier planning opens more SkillBridge slots, fellowships, and training.
Can I use more than one program?
Yes. A common path is TAP plus a SkillBridge fellowship, plus a mentorship program like ACP. Stack what fits your goal.
Are there programs for spouses?
Yes. Military OneSource, IVMF programs, and ACP include spouses in many cases. Check each program's eligibility.
What about other big-tech programs?
Beyond MSSA, options include Grow with Google career resources for veterans and Amazon's military training and apprenticeship programs. Compare current offerings before you commit.
Does VA reach out after I separate?
Yes. VA Solid Start contacts newly separated veterans multiple times in the first year. If you miss a call, you can reach VA directly.
